Natural Gas

All natural gas in Chatham County is distributed by Atlanta Gas Light Company. Georgia was one of the first states in the country to deregulate its natural gas industry. As a result, the Atlanta Gas Light Company stopped selling gas directly to consumers and now distributes natural gas to marketers. The company is the largest distributor in the Southeast and second largest in the country.

Natural Gas ServiceAtlanta Gas Light Company (AGL) is the gas distribution company which serves most of the State of Georgia. AGL is a deregulated utility and does not sell gas directly to customers. AGL installs and maintains the pipe, meters, etc. and customers negotiate their gas rates with any of the Marketers approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission. New commercial/industrial customers have two basic AGL delivery rates to choose from; (1) The G-11 firm, non-interruptible delivery rate, or (2) the interruptible delivery rate. The Marketer then adds AGL’s delivery charges to the gas cost and bills the customer on one invoice. Attached is a map of AGL’s service territory and a list of the Marketers is available at www.aglc.com.
Firm Contract RatesWhile Atlanta Gas Light is not in the direct retail business, a typical industrial customer would have paid an average delivered (burner tip) price of about $5.44 per mmBtu over the last year for firm (non-interruptible) service. This is based on an average of the last twelve months (Jan 09 – Nov 09) NYMEX gas commodity settlement prices of $3.94 per mmBtu plus what we understand are the current market delivery rates, including fuel and surcharges. Please note actual gas rates would be negotiated with a marketer sometime prior to commencement of service.
Interruptible Service RatesWhile Atlanta Gas Light is not in the direct retail business, a typical industrial customer would have paid an average delivered (burner tip) price of about $4.44 per mmBtu over the last year for interruptible service. This is based on an average of the last twelve months (Jan 09 – Nov09) NYMEX gas commodity settlement prices of $3.94 per mmBtu plus what we understand are the current market delivery rates, including fuel and surcharges. Please note actual gas rates would be negotiated with a marketer sometime prior to commencement of service.
